Shubenkov adds senior to under-23 gold

Sergey Shubenkov, Russia’s 21-year-old European under 23 champion over the 110m hurdles, added the European senior title in impressive fashion here as he held off the pressing challenge of the men either side of him – Garfield Darien of France and Artur Noga of Poland – to take gold in 13.16 before dancing an exuberant jig of joy, his face a wide smile.

The big name of the race was the 2004 world Olympic champion Yuriy Borzakovskiy and he duly delivered in a tailor-made race for him, sprinting to victory down the finishing straight.

Arzhakova takes 800m gold in a dramatic finish

Yelena Arzhakova of Russia took the women’s 800m gold with a time of 1:58.51 in a race which produced astonishing drama in the final straight, with Britain’s Lynsey Sharp who had been seventh at the bell passing runners all the way down the final 60 metres to take a silver medal in a personal best of 2:00.52 and match the achievement of her father Cameron, who won 200m silver at the 1982 European Athletics Championships in Athens.

Golovkina claims Russia’s first European gold at 5000m

An exciting last-lap tussle saw Russia’s Olga Golovkina move from third to first in the last 40m of the 5000m to claim gold in 15:11.70. Second was a fast finishing Lydmila Kovalenko of the Ukraine 0.33 down, while the long-time leader, Sara Moreira of Portugal, had to settle for bronze an agonising 0.02 adrift on the line.

Russian team for Helsinki

Russian Athletics Federation has announced the national team for the 2012 European Athletics Championships to be held on 27 June to 1 July in Helsinki (Finland). The Russian team will consist of 69 athletes, 34 men and 35 women.
