Russian team tops placing table in Ostrava

17.07.2011

Russian team scored 220 points at the European U23 Championships in Ostrava and topped the placing table. Russian athletes took 10 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals.

Darya Klishina won the women’s long jump setting a course record of 7.05m. She said, “I am so happy for my personal best as well as the Championships and stadium record. It was a very pleasant competition. I felt I can jump over 7 meters but I knew that for such a long jump the technique must be perfect. Usually, I do not jump technically so good in the first attempts. Mostly I jump too high and then the attempt is too short. Now it was exactly how it should be. It is very good that I managed to jump so far before the World Championships in Korea becasue the opponents will be very strong there. We will not celebrate the title very much because with my coach we have to continue the work and preparations for the next competitions”.

Yelena Arzhakova won her second event, the women’s 1500m, clocking 4:20.55 after she won the women’s 800m two days ago.
“The run was tactically similar to the one in Indoor European Championships in Paris. In the last lap while fighting for the positions I almost fell down. But after that I made a good positions for finishing. Four hard days for me are over and after the hard final in 800m I was not sure if I would have enough power to fight the gold medal. It ended well so I am satisfied and I would like to do as well in other competitions.”

Russian women relay team (Ye. Subbotina, Ye. Yefimova, Yu. Terekhova, O. Topilskaya) won the women’s 4x400m clocking 3:27.72. “It is a great success of the whole team, we hoped in getting gold medal before the race but just in the last finishing we knew for sure we would get it. It was a big struggle and we are very happy about the victory”, said Yevgeniya Subbotina.

In the women’s 4x100m, Russian four (Ye. Filatova, A. Tamkova, Ye. Kuzina, N. Argunova) finished second clocking 44.14. Alyona Tamkova said, “It is a great success for all four of us. We were not thinking about gold. Second place was our maximum. The clear baton changes were the most important. It was our last relay together like this. Maybe we will meet like this team in the senior category”.

Sergey Mudrov took the silver medal in the men’s high jump. He set his personal best of 2.30m. After his performance, Sergey said, “This was one of the my main competitions this season, so I really was aiming for gold. I am disappointed with the result like this. I will focus on the World Universiade now. That is my main goal and hope to improve my PB there”.

Yekaterina Gorbunova finished second in the women’s 5000m clocking 15:45.14. “I wanted to fight for the gold medal but since the beginning of the race it was clear it was impossible. That is why I focused on the second position. The air was very hot and it was hard to breath what did not make the race easier. I prefer slower pace and fast finish because I am used to run also 1500 m. So, today it was a good tactics for me”, said Yekaterina.

Aleksey Fyodorov placed second in the men’s triple jump achieving 16.85m. Yuriy Kovalyov was 3rd with 16.82m. “I lost after a great struggle but I am satisfied. I am very happy about the thing that I could compete without any medical problems. Four weeks ago I had my thigh injured and I have to thank to my coach for being able to compete again”, said Fyodorov. “I believed in myself to jump over 17 metres, because I had already managed to jump that far this year. I had some problems with my technics though so I am satisfied with the third place”, said Kovalyov.

Russian men four (A. Kenig, A. Volobuyev, A. Vazhov, V. Krasnov) finished in the men’s 4x400m clocking 3:04.01. “The loss to the first two teams in the fourth part was too big. I could run easily, I was waiting to get my chance but I didn´t manage to get close enough. We should have started to attack sooner”, said Vladimir Krasnov.
