24.07.2011

Russian athletes took 18 medals (8 gold, 4 silver, 6 bronze) at the European Athletics Junior Championships in Tallinn, Estonia. Russian team won in the medal table and placed second in the placing table with 189 points.

Ilgizar Safiullin won the men’s 3000mSt clocking 8.37,94. He said, “In this competition I achived the Russian National Record 8.37.94, it’s an incredible result for me! I am very happy with the gold, I have no words to describe the feeling! It’s amazing day for me and the Russian team. Now I am planning to take a break and rest!”

Nikita Anishchenkov won the men’s high jump clearing 2,27m, and Daniil Tsyplakov placed 4th – 2.23m. Sergey Morgunov won the men’s long jump with 8,18. Yevgeniy Antonov took the bronze medal with 7.83 (+2.9). “I am moved beyond words, saying that I am happy is not saying enough. Concentrating while I am losing by a centimetre or two is not a problem for me because I am able to get my head in the game. The weather here is not a problem for me since I have competed in harder climates and in my hometown we always have +45 degrees Celsius so the weather here was almost chilly”, said Nikita Anishchenkov.

Aleksandr Yurchenko won the men’s triple jump achieving 16,31m and said, “I’m content with my gold, it can’t be better. Two attempts were really good but on the third attempt the direction of the wind changed. The result was okay, I know that I have more in my legs but my jumps were long enough to win this competition. Russian team is really good here and in 15 minutes we got 3 golds! That’s amazing!”

Vera Rudakova won the women’s 400mH clocking 57,24seconds: “These Championships were the most important competition for me this season so I am very happy that I won. My goal for today was to run faster than I ran yesterday. I hoped that I may run the time 56,50 but I had 57.24, I wanted to beat my personal best today but the final was hard and it was impossible. I’m ready for next class and in one year I’ll be competing in the World Championships”.

Tatyana Borodina won the women’s triple jump with 14,00m. Mariya Kuchina was the best in the women’s high jump clearing 1.95m: “I am so happy with this win! My goal was to set my personal best in this competition and I achieved this goal! I improved it with 1 cm! Being one of the favorite in the high jump, I was still very nervous during the competition, I think it has to do with my age, I am still quite young. Today I had really strong rivals, that motivated me to do my best. Next year I have a goal to participate in London Olympic Games! Wish me luck!”
