Grigoryeva adds LA crown to Paris title

20.03.2006

Russia’s Lidiya Grigoryeva, 32, smashed her personal best and broke the course record in yesterday’s Los Angeles Marathon (19) in a time of 2:25:10 to add to the Paris City Marathon title which she won last year.
In the French capital in 2005, Grigoryeva who had finished in the top-10 in the last two Olympic Games, won in 2:27:01 (10 April 2005), what was her previous personal best until yesterday’s race in California.

With an eighth place finish in New York last autumn (2:27:48 - 6 Nov 2005) following on from a seventh place (71:01) at the World Half Marathon in Edmonton (1 Oct) just a month before, the Russian, who turned 32 on 14 January this year, is continuing to show the greatest form of her career

On Sunday, she saw off the illustrious name of Gete Wami of Ethiopia who finished 16 seconds adrift, with defending champion Lyubov Denisova, also of Russia, taking third place in a time of 2:26:18.

Kenyans took a sweep in the men’s race, and provided seven of the top-10 finishers. Leading them home was Benson Cherono in a course record of 2:08:40. It was also a huge personal best for the 21-year-old Kenyan. Cherono set his previous fastest of 2:11:23, when coming fifth in New York in 2004 (7 November). Notably he also took third place on the podium in last spring’s Boston race (2:12:48 - 18 April).

On Sunday his compatriots Laban Kipkemboi and Simon Wangai, were second and third respectively, in 2:10:08 and 2:10:35.
