Van der Plaesten awarded

12.12.2011 World

Belgium’s 2011 European Athletics U23 Championships decathlon gold medallist Thomas van der Plaetsen has won the 20th anniversary edition of the ‘Vlaamse Reus’, an annual award given out by the Flemish League of Sports Journalists (VBS).

First awarded in 1992, it was created to recognise the year’s best Flemish athlete. The 20-year-old Van der Plaetsen succeeds the famous tennis player Kim Clijsters. Along with his impressive performances in 2011, Van der Plaetsen was especially credited for his perseverance and professional attitude when competing at the World championships in Daegu despite the very sad situation of his father dying while he was in South Korea reports European Athletics.
