Sadova and Makarov win national titles – Russian Champs – Day Three

Tula, Russia - Day three at the National Russian Championships started with an early final in the women’s Discus Throw. The Olympic champion Natalya Sadova proved once again that she has no serious rivals on home soil.
The 34-year-old won easily with a 66.55m release leaving no chances to her opponents. Sadova is one of the few top Russians throwers to be still in action this year as Hammer Throw Olympic champion Olga Kuzenkova is currently on maternity leave and Shot Put former World champion Svetlana Krivelyova is also pregnant.

n Tula, Sadova outclassed all her opponents with Darya Pischalnikova taking silver with a 62.96m effort. The 21-year-old is improving well and might soon become a serious threat for the Russian number one. A two-time Olympian Aleksandra Esipchuck was third with a 62.84m performance.

Svetlana Pospelova sets European fastest time

A member of the 2005 World Championships 4x400m gold medal winning relay team, Svetlana Pospelova won the women’s 400m final with the third fastest time of the year. Her 49.99 clocking sees her as the second fastest in the world so far (behind USA’s Sanya Richards) and the fastest European at what she calls her favourite distance.

Olympic bronze medallist Natalya Antyukh finished second with 50.47 while Tatyana Veshkurova, the second runner of this winter’s World Indoor Championships winning 4x400m team, was third in 50.96.

The men’s one-lap was taken by Vladislav Frolov who clocked 45.41 ahead of Aleksandr Larin (46.00) and Dmitriy Forshev (46.16).

Makarov on top again

The men’s Javelin Throw final was one of the main events of the day as the crowd expected another great duel between Sergey Makarov and Aleksandr Ivanov. Victory went to the more experienced Makarov who had a margin of only 43cm over his younger team-mate.

Makarov was in the lead with a best effort of 84.65m when Ivanov came very close with a last throw of 84.22m. Aleksei Tovarnov, the IAAF World Junior champion won bronze with a 80.09m performance.

Local favourite takes 100m Hurdles title

Igor Peremota won the 110m Hurdles final in 13.37 (+1.7), this season’s European third fastest time while the national indoor champion, Evgeniy Borisov came in second with 13.69. Yakov Petrov claimed bronze just one hundredth of a second off Borisov.

The women’s 100m Hurdles went to local favourite Olga Korshunova, who lives in Tula. The 25-year-old improved her personal best to 12.93 and defeated Irina Pepelyaeva by one hundredth of a second. Tatyana Pavliy took the bronze medal with 12.98.

The European Under-23 bronze medallist Dmitriy Sapinskiy claimed the Long Jump title thanks to a last round effort of 8.17m. He left Ruslan Gataulin in second place (8.13m) while the more experienced Vitaliy Shkurlatov had to be content with bronze (8.12m).

Yuliya Ignatkina won the Heptaphlon with a total score of 6463 points, which is this year’s second best mark behind Carolina Klüft’s world leading performance set in Götzis. Alena Ivleva was second with a score of 6101 points while Natalya Razshupkina managed to claim bronze (6083 points) after a long series of injuries and illnesses.

The men’s Decathlon went to Aleksei Sysoev who managed to break the 8000-point barrier with his 8087 points score ahead of Nickolai Tischenko (7793 points) and Andrei Nedru (7496 points).

200m heats

In the qualification round of the women’s 200m Yuliya Guzchina clocked the European fastest time of the year (22.52) while Natalya Rusakova, a sprint hurdles specialist who did not take part in her favourite event clocked a promising 22.74. The men’s 200m qualification round was topped by Roman Smirnov with a 20.84 performance.
