Flying high

In the men’s High Jump six athletes cleared 2.31, then 2 centimetres higher Daniil Tsyplakova and Sergei Mudrov (2.33) failed, while four others – Aleksei Dmitrik, Aleksandr Shustov, Andrey Silnov and Ivan Ukhov – went on to clear 2.33, and such was thew quality of the competition only the 2011 World Championships silver medallist Aleksey Dmitrik failed to deal with 2.35.

The European champion Shustov managed to clear 2.35 to gain his bronze, while Olympic champion Silnov cleared 2.37 for silver. That left the unpredictable Ukhov, who had failed twice at 2.28, alone and he cleared 2.39m on his first effort, a world lead for 2012, so never mind that he went on to miss at 2.41.

Interesting to note that 2009 World champion Yaroslav Rybakov on a comeback after a serious leg injury, could only clear 2.20.
