Sokolova is happy with the wild-card

20.09.2012

Elena Sokolova, Olympic silver medallist in the long jump and IAAF Diamond League overall winner, shared with Rusathletics.com her plans for the next year.

“I’m still not sure about the indoor season. Right now I’m resting and relaxing after the eventful season. I’m thinking about running sprints indoors. It was actually my first event in athletics and I was quite successful in it at the youth level, but then switched to jumping in sand. My 60m PB is 7.34. I feel the potential in this event, but I just wasn’t able to schedule more than one or two meets a season for the last few years. So I feel it must be the right moment to temporarily switch the events. And I believe that my jumping will only benefit from this move.

I’m very happy that having won the Diamond League I got the wild-card for the World Championships in Moscow. The long jump in Russia is highly competitive. So I’m happy to be freed from the nerve-wrecking national trials. I’m really looking forward to the Worlds. The Luchniki Arena means much to me. I won the World Youth Games of 2002 there. Can you imagine the feelings of the kids that are allowed to compete at this kind of venue? Although there weren’t many spectators, they gave us the warmest welcome and support. I hope that next year the stands will be full”
