Stars of middle distances at “Russian Winter”

25.01.2013

Yekaterina Poistogova, Silas Kiplagat, Daniel Komen and other stellar runners will compete at the IAAF Indoor Permit meeting “Russian Winter”

The event’s organizing committee announced the fields for women’s 1000 m and men’s 1500 m

The one to watch in the 1000 m is Yekaterina Poistogova. Last year she was 5th at this distance at the “Russian Winter” meeting despite winning the final B. But then she had the most stunning season in her career winning the Olympic bronze in London. This year Poistogova will run in the final A, along with the world indoor silver medallist Nataliya Lupu, Anzhelika Shevchenko, Winny Chebet from Kenya and, of course, the fellow Russians: world indoor record holder in the 1500m Yelena Soboleva, European U23 champion Yelena Kotulskaya (Kofanova), European bronze medallist Irina Maracheva, Kristina Khaleyeva, Svetlana Podosyonova and other strong women. The meeting record belongs to Yuliya Chizhenko – in 2006 she ran the race in 2:32.16 – it’s also a Russian and European record.

In the men’s 1500 m we’ll see five Kenyans. The favourites among them are the world silver medallist Silas Kiplagat and two-times world indoor medallist Daniel Komen. Taking into account that they’ll have to compete against the world bronze medallist indoors Mekonnen Gebremedhin and European indoor medallist Diego Ruiz from Spain, we can anticipate fast times, as the participants’ PBs are high. We can also expect some personal bests from Russian runners: Valentin Smirnov, Yegor Nikolayev, Ivan Tukhtachev, Vyacheslav Sokolov and Mark Tolstikhin. The meeting record is 3:35.19 and belongs to Venuste Niyongabo from Burundi, it was set in 1996.
