Shubenkov aims for a medal at the World Championships after European success

If the mark of a great champion is to be able to deliver in times of adversity then rising sprint hurdles talent Sergey Shubenkov did just that at last weekend’s European Athletics Indoor Championships in Göteborg.
The super-smooth 22-year-old Russian came into the final as overwhelming favourite, having recorded the fastest times in both the heats and semi-finals of 7.52. Yet a sluggish start out of the blocks left the man from Siberia plum last after two hurdles – his dream of adding this title to the European outdoor 60m hurdles title seemingly in tatters.
Yet as a measure of his maturity, not to mention sheer class, he refused to panic. He quickly worked at retrieving the situation and overhauled all seven finalists, just pipping Italy's surprise package Paolo Dal Molin by 0.02 in a world leading time and personal best 6.49.
