Russian women share first place after Day 1 of World Cup

Russian women team has taken the lead with 65 points after Day 1 of the 10th World Cup in Athletics being held in Athens, Greece this weekend. Russian women shared the lead with the Americas. Russian men team placed fifth scoring 50 points.
In one of the most anticipated match-ups of the day, the womens 400mH, World champion Yuliya (Pechonkina) Nosova produced a late race rally to defeat American Lashinda Demus for the second time in as many races this year and to become the first 2002 winner to successfully defend. It was really a difficult victory, said Nosova, whose season was limited to just one race prior to Athens due to injury in May. Im short of training and short of competition too.

In the womens triple jump, Tatyana Lebedeva achieved her best result of the day on her second attempt, sailing to 15.13 meters. She said, After the first good jump, I knew I could go further but my technique wasnt very good. Her second best effort of the day was 14.98m.

Yelena Isinbayeva needed only one attempt to win the womens pole vault. When Brazils Fabian Murer was unsuccessful at 4.60 m, Yelena cleared it on her first. After that Isinbayeva tried to leap 4.80 three times, but didnt.
