Russian Winter with record

13.01.2014

The organizing committee of the Russian Winter meeting has announced the line-up in the men’s 1500m and is looking forward to updating the event’s course record of 3:35.19 set by Venuste Njoigabo (Burundi) in 1996.

The main favorites to win the event are the last year’s Russian Winter Bethwell Birgen of Kenya, who clocked 3:35.25 and needed just 6/100 seconds to beat the course record in 2013, his countryman the 2011 World silver medalist and one of the World’s strongest 1500m runners Silas Kiplagat and World and Europena indoor silver medalist Ilham Ozbilen of Turkey.

The last year’s Russian Winter medalists Aman Wote of Ethiopia and Kiprotich Cheboi of Kenya who both have high personal bests will run for the record as well. The organizers hope for Russian runners Valentin Smirnov and Yegor Nikolayev, who set their personal bests at the RussianWinter in 2013. And this season, Nikolayev clocked 7:51.96 in the men’s 3000m.
