Jumping events at Russian Winter

The organizers of the Russian Winter meeting to be held on 2 February have announced the line-up in the men’s high jump, the women’s long jump and the women’s pole vault.

The men’s high jump

Olympic champion Ivan Ukhov is this season’s top newsmaker. He, a four-time winner of the Russian Winter and the meeting’s record holder (2.39m), won the men’s high jump at the Head of Chuvashia Cup with a season best of 2.38m and won at the Lukashevich and Seredkin memorial clearing the all-time indoor third result 2.41m.

Beijing Olympic champion Andrey Silnov started his season with 2.32m at a meeting in Rostov. Both high jumpers will face the 2010 European champion Aleksandr Shustov and the European Indoor champion Sergey Mudrov. The line-up in the men’s high jump includes the 2010 World Indoor bronze medalist Dusty Jonas (USA), Andrey Protsenko (UKR) and Naoto Tobe (JPN) as well.

The women’s long jump

A two-time European champion Darya Klishina competed five times at the Russian Winter. She competed for the first time when she was 17, won the event three times achieving over-6.80m results. Last year, Darya was second, beaten by the 2011 World silver medalist Olga Kucherenko. So, she can to revenge on Kucherenko on 2 February. A high level of the contest will be supported by World and European Indoor bronze medalist Shara Proctor (GBR). The reigning World Heptathlon champion Anna Melnichenko (UKR) has chosen the Russian Winter as a preparing meeting to the World Indoor Championships. Chelsea Hayes (USA; PB: 7.10) can achieve a high result. The meeting record of 7.08m from 1992 belongs to Larisa Berezhnaya (UKR).

The women’s pole vault

Last year, World Indoor bronze medalist Holly Bleasdale (GBR) became the first foreign winner of the women’s pole vault clearing 4.75m. Yelena Isinbayeva has won twice the event, and she holds the meeting record of 4.85m set in 2010. The 2011 World champion Fabiana Murer (BRA) will compete this year as well. A new generation of the Russian pole vaulters will be represented by European U23 champion Angelina Zhuk-Krasnova, European U23 silver medalist and European Indoor bronze medalist Anzhelika Sidorova and many time national champion Anastasiya Savchenko.
