Ivanov and Strelkov win silver and bronze in men’s 20kmRW
Aleksandr Ivanov and Denis Strelkov won the silver and bronze medals in the men’s 20km Race Walking at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich today. They finished in 1 and 2 seconds after Spain’s Miguel Angel Lopez who won the race in 1:19:44. The Russians set a personal best, Ivanov clocked 1:19:45 and Strelkov clocked 1:19:46.
Aleksandr Ivanov — Silver
Pity I did not manage the finish to get the gold. But it was very difficult. Of course, after the World championships my target was to win. The race was very equal, so it is not a shame to take silver, I was so close. But I missed my coach here. Otherwise, the conditions were good here, it was quite warm. I can say I gave 100% into the race today. My next big target - Olympic Games in Rio.
Denis Strelkov — Bronze
The medal is just great. I can tell you, I was so scared that I would be fourth... The final group of four was very strong and everything was very open in the last two kilometres. I desperately wanted to win but every medal counts. Bronze is a good achievement for me and I am very glad for the medal. Of course, we tried to cooperate during the race because we live and train in the same city. I had enough energy and there was the chance to win for sure. But the finish was very challenging.
