Russian Winter’s 2 miles

24.01.2007

2 miles is a rare distance not only in Russia but also in many others countries of the World. To be a World best performer over the 2 miles is very honorary though. So, famous Ethiopian Haile Gebreselassie tried in 2003 to improve the World best and did it clocking 8:04:69. Russians was rarely running the distance in the past, and they are not in the World’s top 100 list. The satiation is hoped to change at the Russian Winter in Moscow.
The fight over the 2 miles will be at the highest speeds on 28 January. The meeting organizers have invited two very strong Kenians, Shadrak Korir who had clocked 8:14:84 (17th time for all time) in the last indoor season and Boniface Songok with 8:12:86 outdoor. They will be supported by pacemakers.

Russians have a goal to beat Rashid Sharafetdinov’s national best of 8:50.8 that he had clocked 36 years ago on 12 February 1971. Vyacheslav Shabunin and one of the Russian team leaders Sergey Ivanov are the favorites.

At the same time Rashid Sharafetdinov has been invited as a guest of honor by the organizers at the meeting. Rashid Sharafetdinov had been the first stayer in the USSR who clocked a sub-28 time in the men’s 10.000m; at the 1971 European Championships, he placed third with 27:56.4. This result was a USSR best for 7 next years and for a Russian best for the 13 next years.
