Isinbayeva breaks own World Indoor Record in Donetsk

11.02.2007

After checking via phonecalls with local organiser Sergy Bubka it was confirmed that the new WR height by Yelena Isinbayeva is 493.

Isinbayeva jumped before 462, 472 and 482, all at first. Then the bar was raised to 492 and she missed twice. For the third she asked for 493 and went over. „It showed her great strength that after two not succesfull jumps she was able go higher and jump more than clearly. It was again a great show before 4000 spectators. I am satisfied with the usual atmosphere and of course the world record is always something special. Yelena was under pressure, because everybody expected it and she was able to handle it,“ said the legendary Bubka.
Her agent Daniel Wessfeldt confirmed that her first two tries at 492 she also had difficulties because the landing mat was not adjusted with the stands as she wanted. But in the third everything went well and she was clearly over. Wessfeldt further explains: „She started to cry. She showed that she is back to record heights. There has been speculations last year about the change of the coach etc. Whether she did the right thing. Now she confirmed she is on the right track. She got used to the changed run-up.“

Second placed Australian Kym Howe bettered the Ocenian indoor record to 472 cm in first attempt and tried for 482 cm. It is the best by Ocenian jumper in all conditions. It was her first indoor serious competition in career. Anna Rogowska was third on count-back with also 472. Other two russian jumpers went over 462 Tatyana Polnova over Yulia Golubchikova (who on Friday won Russian champs). Monika Pyrek in first competition of the year went over 452. German record holder Caroline Hingst as seventh also 452 and Fabiana Murer from Brasil (also coached by Vitaliy Petrov) was only 1 cm behind her South American record from Millrose Games. The competition lasted for 3 hours.

Men competition was won by Paul Burgess from Australia who jumped 580 on count-back with his former country-mate Viktor Chistyakov (now Russia) who did also 580 cm as third Oleksandr Korchmyd with new indoor best of 580 cm.
