Summer season gathering speed


The World athletic calendar is already gladdening fans with attractive competitions around the World. At the last weekend, some of Russian athletes as well as their foreigner rivals to participate in the Znamensky Memorial competed at their first meetings.
Russian decathlon competitor, World junior champion Arkadiy Vasilyev placed third at a meeting in Italian city of Desenzano, achieving his personal best of 7820 points, just 5 points behind the runner-up Vitaliy Smirnov from Uzbekistan. The winner was Paul Terek with 8132 points. Yana Panteleyeva was seventh in the heptathlon with 5688 points.

Anatasiya Kapachinskaya, preparing to the main season in the USA, was fourth in the womens 200 meters at the Festival Atletico Veracruz in Mexico with 23.73 seconds. The winner was Torry Edwards of the USA with 22.88 seconds.

Some of the Znamensky Memorial future participants achieved good results at an IAAF World Athletics Tour meeting in Osaka, Japan, where take place the 2007 IAAF World Championships this summer.

Polands Olympic champion Kamila Skolimowska was third in the womens hammer throw at the meeting with 70.42 meters, and Croatias Ivana Brkljacic won the event achieving 72.15m. Skolimowska said that it was her first start over the past eight months, so it was somewhat difficult for her.

Another participant of the Znamensky Memorial Grzegorz Sposob of Poland cleared 2.24m easily placing second. He needed a little bit to take 2.30m.

William Kiplagat from Kenia, a participant of the main race at the Znamensky Memorial over 5000 meters, finished second at the 25km run in Berlin clocking 1:15:24.
