All joking aside: Olympic summer begun

The beginning of summer has been marked by series of important athletic meetings and a number of high results. The main meeting of the last weekend was the World record by Usain Bolt of Jamaica at an IAAF Grand Prix meeting in New York in the men’s 100m – 9.72 seconds. Bolt bettered by 0.02sec Asafa Powell’s World record and beat World Champion Tyson Gay clocking 9.85sec.
Russian athletes were ones of the main heroes of the weekend as well.

Yevgeniy Lukyanenko won the men’s pole vault at the ISTAF, the IAAF Golden League first stage, in Berlin clearing 5.85m (Russian season best and personal best). Sergey Kucheryanu was third with 5.75m and Maksim Mazukin from Ukraine was second with 5.80. All athletes will compete at the Znamensky Memorial in Zhukovsky on 15 June.

Yuliya Gushchina clocked a good time on the women’s 200m – 22.58 seconds, placing second. AnnA Chicherova finished third in the women’s high jump clearing 1.97m, the Russian season best.

In Austrian city of St.Poelten, Leonid Kivalov placed second in the men’s pole vault clearing 5.55m. Tatyana Dektyaryova won the women’s 100mH clocking 13.26sec.
