Galkina-Samitova improves her World Steeplechase record

Russia’s Gulnara Galkina-Samitova this evening improved her World record in the women’s 3000m Steeplechase when winning the inaugural Olympic title in this event in front of a capacity 91,000 audience on the third evening of athletics competition in the Bird’s Nest.
Galkina-Samitova who held the record at 9:01.59, became the first woman below 9mins, as she smashed the field apart - 1000m, 2:58.63 and 2000m, 6:01.20 – and set a time of 8:58.81, which subject to usual ratification procedures is a new World record.
