Chambers yearns for European Championships

22.01.2009 World

As expected there is no place for Dwain Chambers in the British team announced to face the USA, Sweden, Germany and a Commonwealth Select squad at the Aviva International in Glasgow January 31.
The reformed drug cheat although now welcomed by UK Athletics to compete for them at international level cannot compete at the Kelvin Hall indoor event as it falls under the status of a Euro Meetings Group competition, informs David Martin.

The consortium last year passed a ruling which prevents athletes who have served a two years drugs suspension from its meetings which automatically debars Chambers who tested positive for the anabolic steroid Tetrahydrogestrinone in August 2003.

Chambers after serving his ban returned to competition but then undertook an American football career before making another comeback last year and sharing the World Indoors 60metres silver medal.

The 30-year-old Londoner instead plans chasing the Euro qualifying time at the Birmingham Games which take place on the same day and does not fall under the Euro meetings umbrella.
