Almost 200,000 tickets already sold for Berlin 2009

LOC of the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Berlin, Germany, announced on Thursday (5) that they had sold almost 200,000 of the 500,000 tickets on offer for the Championships.
The Championships take place from 15 to 23 August 2009, in the German capital’s 1936 Olympic Stadium.
At a press conference yesterday, President of the German athletics federation Clemens Prokop promised that "these World Championships will set a new standard", while Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit spoke of "strong demand at this early stage" and said that the city and the LOC were "on track" with its preparations.

Ticket sales are to generate ?15 million for the overall event budget of ?44 million.

IAAF President Lamine Diack commented – “I’m delighted to receive the news of such promisingly ticket sales. The historic Olympic stadium resplendent with its light blue track after its total refurbishment in recent years is an ideal setting for what will be the biggest sporting event on the planet in 2009. We confidently look forward to nine days of competition in front of large and knowledgeable crowds of spectators.”

Among other information given by the LOC at the press conference, it was announced that Vattenfall Europe AG will be a National Partner, and it was also confirmed that there has been exceptionally high interest in the volunteer programme, with more than 5000 applications for the 3500 available volunteer positions available for the championships.
