Melanie Walker targets 400m hurdles world record

22.03.2009 World

Melanie Walker has voiced her intent to break the women’s 400m hurdles world record, but says she is in no great hustle to challenge the mark currently being held by Russian Yuliya Pechenkina.
Walker outclassed a champion field in Beijing to win gold in an Olympic record and personal best of 52.64 seconds, a time that was just .03 seconds off Pechenkina’s world mark, set in Tula, Russia on 8 August 2003.

Admitting that she would be delighted at replacing the Russian at the top of the world listings, the Jamaican says she won’t make it her main priority.

“I really want to get the world record, but I don’t want to rush for it,” Walker said in a television interview here recently. “I just hope the world record comes just like the Olympic record (did) last year (in Beijing).”

Yuliya Pechenkina is preparing for the outdoor season and going to achieve her level of results. She plans to compete at the Znamensky Memorial on 5 July.
