Kanter this time 69.86

07.05.2009 World

Olympic and world winner Estonian Gerd Kanter continued in winning in California at another special discus meet in Chula Vista with fourth round effort 69.86 m.

Coach/agent Vestein Hafsteinsson commented on his web (globalthrowing.com) as follows: “Gerd was a little tired and could not follow up on his big training throw of 72.66m some days ago and “only” did 69.86m.

Gerd has spoiled us with so many throws around 70m through the years, but as a coach I am always happy with distances that far. Gerd did not have a good meet and still threw that far. The heavy lifting has gotten to him a little as expected and the plan was also that he would take it a little more easy before the last meet on the 12th at La Jolla and then we hope he hits the big one.” Another Estonian Mart Israel was second with his second career-best 66.05.

Sweden´s Niklas Arrhenius was third with another big mark 65.42 and fourth Egyptian Omar El Ghazaly (64.95). But great day also for Austrian Gerhard Mayer who for first time in his career achieved two 64+ throws and improved the national record (63.32 by Georg Frank in 1981). In first round with 64.20 and confirmed that in fifth achieving 64.13. Dutch Eric Cadee as sixth still respectable 64.00 m.  Danish shot putter Kim Christensen opened up with a great 19.38 m, his second best outdoor mark ever.

US Becky Breisch won the women discus (60.30). When the big throwers will meet for first time? All looks like the first this years clash Kanter against former world and Olympic winner Virgilijus Alekna of Lithuania could happen at Danek Memorial in Czech Republic (Turnov) on May 26.
