French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie, 23, improved by 1 cm Steven Hooker world lead with 5.96 during the Auvergne championships.
He cleared the height at his first attempt, then tried unsuccessfully 6.01, a would be new French national record. The 2009 European Indoor Champion who jumped as a guest, added 16 cm to his outdoor personal best to become the second all-time French vaulter.
Only National record holder Jean Galfione who achieved 5.97 in 1998 and 5.98 in 1999 did better.
