Russians shine in Thessaloniki

Yelena Isinbayeva, Mariya Abakumova, Yaroslav Rybakov won their events on Day 1 of the IAAF/VTB Bank World Athletics Final in Thessaloniki.
2-time Olympic Champion Yelena Isinbayeva won the women’s pole vault clearing 4.80m. Yelena started at 4.60 and didn’t clear it on her first. So, she moved the bar to 4.70 and cleared it on her fist becoming the winner. She cleared 4.80 on her third and tried to clear 5.07, but unsuccessfully. Yuliya Golubchikova placed 4th with 4.50.
World Champion Yaroslav Rybakov won the men’s high jump with 2.34. Ivan Ukhov placed 5th - 2.26. Olympic silver and World bronze medalist Mariya Abakumova won the women’s javelin throw achieving 64.60m.
Yelena Sokolova placed second in the women’s long jump with 6.81, Tatyana Lebedeva placed third – 6.79, Olga Kucherenko placed 4th (6.61) and Irina Meleshina was 8th (6.50).
Pavel Sofin took the third place in the men’s shot put setting a PB of 20.82.
Yuriy Borzakovskiy finished 5th in the men’s 800m clocking 1:46.04, and Anna Alminova was 7th in the women’s 1500m (4:15.76).
