Canadian marathon all-comers record by Mungara

28.09.2009 World

Kenyan defending champion Kenneth Mungara (36) won the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon clocking 2:08:32 what is the fastest ever in Canada.

For Mungara also life-time best, former course record was 2:09:30 by another Kenyan John Kelai (2007). Ethiopian pair of Chala Lemi and Gashaw Melese Afsaw were second and third in 2:08:49 and 2:09:23. „That was a surprise,“ Mungara said of the winning time, having won last year in 2:11:01 and coming in with a personal best of just half a minute faster than that. „I will be back (next year). I like it here.“ TheStar.com informs. In the women‘s race, Amane Gobena (23) overcame stomach cramps and overhauled leader and defending champion Mulu Seboka at the 40-kilometre mark to record the first marathon victory of her career. Haile Kebebush was third as Ethiopia claimed the top three spots. Gobena‘s 2:28:31 was a new course record, second Seboka achieved 2:29:37 and third Kebebush 2:30:48. Best European was Russian Natalya Volgina as 6th (2:35:50). An estimated 20 000 runners took part in the marathon, half-marathon and five-kilometre races along the lakefront, under humid and overcast conditions with the temperature at 17C at the start. City Mayor David Miller finished the 21-kilometre half marathon distance in about two hours and a quarter.
