The head of athletics in South Africa has been suspended by the country’s Olympic governing body over his handling of the Caster Semenya gender controversy.

Athletics South Africa has also issued an unconditional apology to the athlete, whose ambiguous gender has been the centre of worldwide debate since her runaway 800 metres victory at the World Championships in Berlin in August.

The South African government had earlier called for Chuene’s resignation, describing ASA’s treatment of the athlete as “disgusting”, but the official had steadfastly refused to stand down.
