Gebre plans WR attack in Dubai

07.11.2009 World

Ethiopia‘s Haile Gebrselassie will be favourite to defend his title when returning to the 2010 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon in the New Year.

Gebrselassie winner of the lucrative event for the last two years is also determined to attack his world record of 2:03:59 over the very fast Dubai course on January 22.  On his debut two years ago he ran what was then the world‘s second fastest ever time for the marathon and last January saw inclement weather wreck his challenge on the mark he achieved in Berlin in September 2008. Gebrselassie said: “Last year the rain was bad and I wasn’t feeling 100% so to win and prove I could run well in the wet weather was a bonus for me. I still can’t believe I didn’t break the world record in 2008 – everything was perfect except the pace for the first half of the race, which was too fast.”   Gebrselassie’s last marathon appearance was in Berlin in September where he won for the fourth consecutive year but fell short of breaking his own world record. After that he won the Porto Half-Marathon and plans a end of the year road race in Bitburg, Germany.
