Borzakovskiy the fastest 800m runner in Europe again
Yuriy Borzakovskiy once again was the fastest 800m runner in Europe, but unlike 2008 in 2009 the difference on the yearlist was only 0.01 seconds between the Russian and Bram Som of the Netherlands.
At the World Championships in Berlin, things changed for the better as a total of three Europeans made it to the final in comparison to none in Beijing.
In the 1500m the reign of Frenchman Mehdi Baala continued with the 31-year-old grabbing a seventh place finish in the German capital and also topping the European yearlist with a time of 3:30.96.
Although the 800m season in Europe was far from perfect, where only three athletes went under 1:45, there was still plenty of promise for a brighter future of middle distance running in the continent.
