Close contests the prevailing theme in Moscow

28.02.2010

Heated battles in the women’s 400m and Long Jump were the key highlights on the second day of the Russian Indoor championships on Saturday (27) where 11 titles were decided.

In the 400, not even a studied reading of the photo could separate Tatyana Firova and Natalya Nazarova at the finish. In the end, it was declared a tie, with each clocking 51.39. Firova, a World and Olympic medallist in the 4x400m Relay, clocked a world-leading 51.22 in Friday’s first round, a personal best for the 27-year-old. Elena Migunova was third in 51.86.

The intensity of battle to secure spots for the World Indoor Championships was clearly illustrated in the women’s Long Jump, where just two centimetres separated the top three. Here, Anna Nazarova prevailed with a 6.75m leap, just one centimetre better than Tayana Kotova. Risin start Darya Klishina, still a junior, had to settle for third with a 6.73m best.
