Reigning European 100 m and 200 m champion Francis Obikwelu of Portugal made a surprise announcement for Barcelona 2010 organizers.

The sprinter who retired from big events said he is getting ready for the European Championships this summer. A secret until now, his return to competition appears to be imminent. Having recovered from many injuries during the last year, the Portuguese with Nigerian background aims to achieve the 100 m final.  „It is not the same as it used to be“, tells Obikwelu Barcelona 2010 quite modest, „if I go to Barcelona it is to enjoy the competition. I take athletics differently now and won‘t put any pressure on myself or talk about possibilities. I‘m satisfied if I qualify for the final, which is my objective“. 31 year old Obikwelu lives in Lisbon, where he is preparing together with a group of young athletes. Obikwelu thinks that his biggest rivals will be Dwain Chambers and Christophe Lemaitre.
