Eva Maria Gradwohl refuses doping test

05.05.2010 World

Austrian marathon runner Eva Maria Gradwohl (37) has refused a doping test while on holidays in Croatia. The national anti-doping agency NADA said.

At her website she later confirmed her retirement. Her friend Walter Mayer was banned by the International Olympic Committee after blood transfusion equipment was found at the quarters of the Austrian cross country skiing team at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City. At the next Winter Olympics in Turin, Mayer was present despite his ban, and a search again turned up material that can be used for blood doping. Gradwohl won the marathon in the Austrian town of Linz in April, as well as last year‘s Florence marathon. Her result 2:34:12 in Linz qualified her for the European athletics championships in Barcelona this summer. Another former world class runner Steffi Graf ended her position as Athletes spokesperson in the board of Sporthilfe. It is because NADA will open an investigation in her case.
