World leads for Culson and Oliver

The 10 000 crowd at the Francisco Paquito Montaner stadium saw two world leading marks at 4th Ponce Grand Prix meet (Area Permit event).

Home best athlete and world medalist Javier Culson won in new national and meet record, also world leading and third best CAC ever 47.72.  “In my first race (of the season), I amended some technical elements for the second race. I did the same in the second race (last weekend). I was expecting a perfect race today, but I made mistakes in the fourth and fifth hurdles”, explained the 25-year old as the crowd continued to applaud him. Second Michael Tinsley posted also fast 48.46 over Trinidad´s talent Jehue Gordon (48.47) and Felix Sanchez (49.21). Watching from the stands was his agent and former World record holder Michael Johnson.  Another Johnson´s athlete olympic and world winner at 400 m Jeremy Wariner was a surprise entry. He was second in the 400 m in 45.47 beaten by another olympic winner David Neville (45.44). Second world lead for US olympic medalist David Oliver at 110 m hurdles with 13.12 (0.0), also a meet record. „Good day at the office,“ commented Oliver on his twitter. In total 6 meet records were registered. Jamaican Dwight Thomas was second (13.41) over David Payne who debuted into the season (13.42). Women achieved four meet records. Funmi Jimoh with very solid 677 (+1.8) in long jump, US women team 43.58 in the 4x100 m, Natasha Hastings 51.47 in the 400 m and Gloria Asumnu in the 100 m 11.15 (+0.7). To these events to add that second Canadian Ruky Abdulai equaled her PB (674, +1.3), that Ruddy Zang Milama of Gabon was second in the 100 m with 11.22 over veteran Chandra Sturrup (at age 38 got 11.23). In remaining women events US Dominique Darden won the 400 m hurdles (55.38), world indoor champion at 400 m Debbie Dunn was the fastest in the 200 m (22.86, -0.2). Grenada´s record holder Neisha Bernard Thomas was clear 800 m winner (1:59.92) and Damu Cherry posted fastest 12.82 (-0.1) in the hurdles. In men sprints Churandy Martina of Netherlands Antilles won in 10.12 (+0.1) in close race over US Trell Kimmons (10.12), Trinidad´s Aaron Armstrong (10.17), former olympic winner Shawn Crawford (10.29) and former world medalist Derrick Atkins of Bahamas (10.31). Xavier Carter posted 20.75 (+0.3) to be the best in the 200 m. In the relay US team (Kimmons, X. Carter, Crawford, R. Wilson) clocked fast 38.87 over Netherland Antilles 39.06 and Puerto-Rico with national record 39.15. Two more winners to add: US Trevell Quinley in long jump (790, -0.9) and South African Peter van der Westhuizen the 1500 m (3:38.72).
