13.05.2010 World

A judge suffered serious injuries after an athlete hurled a javelin striking the international class judge in the head during a track and field competition in the Estonian capital of Tallinn on Wednesday, an Estonian television station reported.

According to witnesses, Edgar Aavik, 77, pulled the javelin from his head himself after the incident at the Audentes Stadium. He was taken from the field by ambulance to the hospital and was feeling fine, however lost consciousness when he arrived at the hospital. He is scheduled for operations.

Competition organizers blame Aavik for the incident saying he was standing in the wrong place at the designated javelin throw sector of the field.
