Bengtsson gets world youth best at European Youth Olympic Trials

23.05.2010

Swedish pole vaulter Angelica Bengtsson re-wrote the record books at the second day of the European Youth Olympic Trials in Moscow on Saturday, clearing successive world youth best performances of 4.42m and then 4.47m.

The 16-year-old 2009 IAAF World Youth Championships gold medallist only came down to earth when she had three failures at 4.52m, which would have been a new world junior record as well as a Swedish senior national record.

Although her clearance is also a qualifying mark for the European Athletics Championships, which will be held in Barcelona between July 26 and August 1, Bengtsson is unlikely to make the trip to Spain because the event is sandwiched tightly between the IAAF World Junior Championships in Canada and the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, where she will start as the clear favourite at both events.
