Day 1: Russia hold big lead at halfway point on first day

19.06.2010

The 2010 SPAR European Team Championships favourites Russia hold a lead of 18.5 points at the halfway point on the first day on Saturday.

Russia have 98 points with France in second place with 79.5 and Italy just half a point further back in third place.

Last year’s second place team had two winners in the first 10 events: Yelena Zadorozhinaya sprinting home in the women’s 3000m in 9:08.42 and former Pole Vault world record holder Svetlana Feofanova winning her specialist event with 4.65m.

“It feels good to get 12 points and help the team in this way,” said Zadorozhinaya, emphasising her team’s determination to win in the Norwegian city of Bergen this weekend and depose last year’s champions Germany as the Europe’s top athletics nation.

The key to Russia’s early success has been their solid scoring from the rest of the team, finishing outside the top three in only two of the initial 10 events.
