Italian Damilano to coach Chinese walkers

Italian walking guru Sandro Damilano, who has won 46 medals in major championships with his athletes, has stepped down from his post as walking coach for the Italian national federation FIDAL.

Damilano, who no longer coaches 50 km Olympic champion Alex Schwazer, will work for the Chinese Federation but will continue coaching Italian top walkers Giorgio Rubino and Elisa Rigaudo in the IAAF Walking Training Centre in Saluzzo in Piedmont. Damilano will coach six top Chinese athletes who will spend a long period in Saluzzo. The Chinese group features Si Tianfeng (PB 3:42:55), Berlin World bronze medallist Liu Hong, Hao Wang the World silver medallist in Berlin, two 19-year-old walkers Wang Zhen and Zelin Cai (second in Moncton at World Junior Championships). The project with the Chinese Federation is aimed at the Olympic Games in London 2012.
