05.03.2011

Anna Avdeyeva won the women’s shot put at the European Indoor Championships in Paris on Day 2. She updated her collection of the bronze medal from the European Championships in Barcelona.

Avdeyeva achieved 18.70m. Irina Tarasova placed 8th with 17.17m.

Anna AVDEYEVA
I really wanted a medal and of course, I dreamed about gold. The competition started with a fault for me and just in the second I managed 18.70. I was so happy that I almost could not concentrate for the other attempts. Christina Schwanitz achieved 18. 65 in the third round and was really close to me. But despite the fact I was not able to keep the technique in the last attempts and could not concentrate very well. In the end, I am very happy I am the winner.

Ivan Ukhov defended his champion title in the men’s high jump, Aleksandr Shustov placed third after Czech’s Jaroslav Baba. Ukhov cleared 2.38m, Baba and Shustov cleared 2.34m.

Ivan UKHOV
I know I im world record shape this season and I wanted to break it. However, there were too many attempts in the competition and I did not spare enough energy till the end. Still, the 238 jump was pretty high. I was very surprised about how Jaroslav Baba jumped today. I know him from other competitions this season and he surprised me a lot. I am glad I was able to defend my title. I would like to thank to the audience here in Paris. It was very nice competition.

Aleksandr SHUSTOV
I am glad I was able to show the art of high jumping here in Bercy. I had so many competitions this season and to be honest, I feel very tired. That is maybe the reason why my foot started to hurt me during the final. I must start to train again and to prepare for outdoors. The indoor season is specific because of the special surface but I confirmed I can perform well both outdoors and indoors. I jump outdoors even better and this can be the recipe how to beat Ivan Ukhov in summer. I am going to relax for a few days now, then I will sit with my coach and will plan the preparation for following season.

Yelena Arzhakova won the women’s 1500m in 4:13.78, Yekaterina Martynova finished third in 4:14.16.

Yelena ARZHAKOVA (RUS)
I really did not expect to win this race. I do not know what was in my mind, I was just running as crazy and I had much luck. The tactics was to hold in the front and to go forward in the last laps. My training was really good this year and I plan to compete at 1500 m also in summer. I am so happy to bring home this gold.
