Yelena Isinbayeva wins in Birmingham

18.02.2006

Yelena Isinbayeva won the womens pole vault at the Norwich Union Grand Prix, held in Birmingham today. She cleared 4.79 meters. Svetlana Feofanova placed third with a clearance of 4.45 meters.
For the first time, Isinbayeva attempted, when there was only Polands Anna Rogowska in the field, and successfully cleared 4.65 meters. Then, the rivals began to compete at 4.79 meters, which was overcome by Isinbayeva at her first attempt and by Rogowska at her third one.

After that Rogowska went on to 4.86m and Isinbayeva to 4.92m, which is a new World record mark. Unfortunately, Isinbayeva couldnt clear the new high.

Im not disappointed that I didnt get the record today because I am very tired, said Yelena who missed her flight connection to the UK on Thursday and had to wait five hours in the airport.

Its getting more difficult to set World records every time, said Yelena. I will just have to go bit-by-bit and maybe soon I will have big jumps indoors as well as outdoors.
