Indian doping problems

07.07.2011 World

In India in 2011 already 9 athletes returned positive doping tests in the first six months. In the National Games held at Ranchi during February three athletes were tested positive.

400m hurdler Kuldev Singh and Javelin thrower Vipin Kasana have registered personal bests of 50.31 secs and 77.22m to win their respective events.  However they lost their medal subsequently, as also women’s discus throw silver medallist Rinku Sangwan, due to drug offence. But the Indian athletics fraternity received a big shockwave this week as six athletes tested positive for adverse analytical findings.  First came the news of two top ranking 400m runners Mandeep Kaur and Jauna Murmu.  Both were caught in the out-of-competition tests conducted by International Doping Tests & Management (IDTM) on behalf of the IAAF. Subsequently NADA announced the results of samples taken during the Inter-State championships at Bangalore (11-14 June).  Four athletes -- runners Sini Jose and Tiana Mary Thomas, long jumper Hari Krishnan and shot putter Sonia Kumari -- joined the offenders. Mandeep Kaur and Sine Jose were important among the Indian 4x400m relay quartet which won gold in both Commonwealth Games (Delhi) and Asian Games (Guangzhou) last year.  Their exit will be big blow to the nation’s ambition to send its relay team to the London Olympics next year. Coaches belongs to former Soviet Republics and recruited here on contract are said to be the main cause for this situation. Informs Murali Krishnan.
